[PROJECT HAS ENDED] The "Crowds" Library

Post by MikeQuell » June 13th, 2014, 8:51 am

The "Crowds" Library

RECORDING DEADLINE: October 1st, 2014
SUBMISSION WINDOW: October 1st, 2014 - November 3rd, 2014

*UPDATE 11/4/2014*
Probably wont download everyone's recordings until this Sunday. You have until then to submit!

If you will be contributing to the library please click "Yes" on the poll. This will help encourage others to join the project. The more contributors we have the stronger the library will be.

The goal of this library is to capture 3-5 minutes of crowds or walla from your local region. It's best if the conversations in the recordings are unintelligible, which is why we are using the term "walla" to describe this project. We realize it's probably unrealistic for most people to have access to a group of performers to capture proper walla, so recording large groups of people in a public area is also being accepted.

Crowdsource Library Submission Process

Process:
Contributors will have until October 1st, 2014 to record content. Once the recording deadlines has been reached, contributors will be asked to submit their recordings by no later than October 20th, 2014. I'm trying a new "submission window" strategy that will hopefully make it easier when performing a quality control check on the recordings and keeping everything organized.

Format:
All files should be recorded in stereo at 96kHz, 24bit.

File Naming:
I'm open to suggestions for the naming convention on this project. Please respond in this thread if you have any thoughts on how we should structure it.

Please keep file names fairly short (31 characters if possible) and use underscores instead of spaces when necessary.

Use the following order for naming conventions:
  • - CATEGORY: We will be using the prefix "CROWD".
    - Location (Country): Where the recording was captured. Please use the country name.
    - Location (City_State): Where the recording was captured. Please use the city name or closest thing to it.
    - Misc: Any other small details you can squeeze in. Think one or two key words from the recording.
Examples:
CROWD_Italy_Naples_Restaurant_01
CROWD_USA_Chicago_Illinois_Coffee_Shop_01
CROWD_USA_Chicago_Illinois_Coffee_Shop_02
CROWD_Canada_Vancouver_Women_Baby_Shower_01

If numbering variations please start with a suffix padding of "0" (01, 02, 03).

Meta-Data:
If capable, please embed appropriate meta-data to the broadcast wave file information. Things to tag are the recordist's name, more detailed info about the location, mic setup, and other keywords from the recording.

Submission:
Upload your file(s) to a Google Drive account and share them with audibleworlds [at] gmail [dot] com.

Once the file is confirmed I will copy it to a master folder and notify the submitter that it has been received. When the submission deadline has passed I will grant contributors access to the password protected library. From here you can sync files to your local computer. I recommend using Google’s local app that you can download to your PC/Mac/Linux.

Please make sure your submission email has your correct contact name. If not, please leave a note (in the email or uploaded folder) when sharing your uploaded file so I can keep track of who has shared what. On previous projects people would send me files with no contact information and I had to track down further information.

Retrieval:
When the submission window has expired, files with go through a quick quality control check and the library will hopefully be released 2-4 weeks later. I will email contributors a password protected link to the file locations.

Legal:
A contributors submission and involvement in this project is a digital signature that they agree to not sell or repackage the contents of this collection for redistribution in any way. By downloading and contributing to the project, contributors agree to give up any artistic credit required for using the submitted source recording. Original recordings submitted for this collection/project are free to use in commercial and personal projects without permission and/or without providing a credit to any specific contributor for their recorded submission(s).

Awesome! This should prove to be very useful!

I think we may want to add to the requirements that there cannot be any music in the backgrounds of these recordings! I know it should be obvious, but stating it anyways couldn't hurt.

Thanks for organizing this again Mike!

Definitely in on this one!

The previous ambience library has already proven to be of extraordinary value in a recent project. Mike, thanks for your work in hosting and organizing this!
