Portrayals of Deafness and Silence In Film

Post by MikeQuell » September 20th, 2016, 12:06 am

The lady and I watched "Hush" tonight and I was pleasantly surprised on the premise. The main protagonist is deaf and dumb and she must defend herself from a home intruder. I had no idea going into it that this was the plot, so I was definitely excited to see what they would do with it. The film was incredibly quiet in comparison to many releases. The music was also heavily underscored and sparse. Overall, the film definitely lent itself to some cool sound moments, although I wish it would have pushed that opportunity a bit further.

It got me thinking that this might be a cool place to discuss films and other experiences that have had unique moments of silence or deaf characters prominently featured throughout. Are there any others your would recommend? I'm mostly looking for prolonged stories and not just a sequence or scene.

Thanks!
