The Future of Game Audio.

Lots of gamers play with their sound off on their portable devices that is why many developers are skipping high quality audio production on games on the mobile plattforms.
I belive that sound in games will get even more focus and priority in a near future considering that VR (Oculus Rift, Valve VR etc.) is here soon.
The illusion of a virtual reality will not hold if the sound is not on par with the visual experience.

What are your thoughts on this topic?

Oculus Rift is very cool! I'm definitely waiting to see how far that goes. I personally wouldn't feel safe wearing one on the train ride home in public (for me or the people on board, haha).

I think portable games are growing incredibly fast and the audio quality on those games has only increased over the years. More and more developers are trying to polish their product to stand out over others and the audio experience is definitely a part of that. I agree with you that a lot of people play with their sound off, but I also think there's a big factor on what type of game you're playing. There are a ton of great action/adventure games on the mobile platform that I'm sure most people play with headphones. Angry Birds or Threes? Maybe not so much.

On the line of headphones, these will also evolve more and more as Bluetooth technology advances. People will eventually be walking around with earbuds in at all times (a lot do now). This will feed into their ears for text messages, phone calls, and anything audio related being sent out of the device. With that, audio will probably get even more attention. It would be great to see stereo Bluetooth sets being developed/marketed more.
